Travel Health Tips

1. Although rare, while flying in a pressurized aircraft cabin, passengers may experience flatulence, blocked ears, air sickness or other discomfort. It is advisable to avoid eating beans, cabbage, or drinking carbonated beverages including beer, which can cause one of these symptoms.
2. You should not become dehydrated on a flight. It is important to drink an adequate amount of water or juice when traveling.
3. While you are seated, it is helpful to move your legs three to four minutes every hour to promote proper blood circulation. The “In-flight Exercises” aboard Hainan Airlines also demonstrate additional ways for body stretching.
4. It is best not to wear tight-fitting clothes.
5. Please ensure that the medicines you have to take during your flight are accessible, and not in your checked baggage.
6. It is strongly advised not to fly within 24 hours after you have had a toothache or dental treatment, as the pressure may cause discomfort in flight.
7. To ensure the comfort of all passengers, smoking is prohibited during the flight.

How does one deal with air sickness?

1. Certain medications such as scopolamine and dimenhydrinate, taken at least half an hour before take-off, may prevent air sickness.
2. Drink an adequate amount of water and do not drink wine or eat foods such as beans or cabbage. Taking gingers and alkaline food may be helpful.
3. Relax, remain calm and keep a positive attitude before take-off and during the flight.
4. Window seats provide a view, and keep you away from traffic in the aisle.
5. You can read, chat with your seatmate or listen to music. Having a nap is a good way to relax.
6. Maintain a sense of direction and look into the distance instead of staring at the nearby clouds.
7. Relax your body when you feel unwell. You will feel better by focusing on a distant object or engaging in something if it is not serious. You can also massage the points such as Neiguan (located three inches from your inner palm), Hegu and the back of your ears. If it is more serious, try to remain still and calm in your seat, lean on your seat back and minimize any head movement. If you need further assistance, please turn to our flight attendants.

What should I do if my ears feel uncomfortable during the flight?

It is normal to feel some discomfort in your ears due to the change of cabin pressure when the plane is taking off and landing. Swallowing food, chewing gum or sucking on a hard candy can help to ease the discomfort.
