Hainan Airlines – an overview


Since its first flight, Hainan Airlines has been operating safely for 21 successive years, maintained an excellent safety record, and its service has won the unanimous approval of a wide range of passengers and those in the civil aviation industry. It was awardedthe WTA World’s Best Economy Class Award at the World Travel Awards by the organizing committee on November 30, 2013 andwas shortlisted by internationally renowned brand consulting assessment agency BRANDZ for the most valuable top 100 Chinese brands on December 4. Since 2011, Hainan Airlines, with its high quality service standards and continuous years of service innovation, has won four consecutive global SKYTRAX five-star airline ratings. Meanwhile, it has also won SKYTRAX “Best Airline in China” and “Best Staff Service in China” awards for the fifth time.

Development history


1993 -- Hainan Airlines formally begins its operations with its first flight from Haikou to Beijing.


1994 -- Trains its first pilot in command – Su Jilong.


1997 -- Name of the company is changed from Hainan Province Airlines to Hainan Airlines Co Ltd.


1998 -- Introduces the first Boeing 737-800 aircraft in China and the Asian-Pacific Region.


1999 -- Hainan Airlines shares (A-shares) are listed and traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.


2002 -- Introduces its first dual aisle, widebody passenger aircraft, the Boeing 767 luxury airliner.


2004 -- Opens up its first intercontinental flight route from Beijing to Budapest.


2007 -- Introduces its first Airbus, the widebody A330-200 aircraft.


2009 -- First airline in mainland China to be awarded a SKYTRAX 4-star rating.


2011 -- Awarded the title of “SKYTRAX 5-star Airline Company”.


2012 -- Retains the “SKYTRAX 5-star Airline Company” certification for a second year in a row.


2013 -- Retains the “SKYTRAX 5-star Airline Company” title for a third year in a row.

State of development


Starting in 1993, with Haikou as its main base, the company has set up seven flight operational bases in Beijing, Xi’an, Taiyuan, Urumqi, Guangzhou, and Dalian.


With a flight network spreading all over China, covering Asia , Europe, the Americas, Oceania and Africa, Hainan Airlines has opened up almost 500 domestic and international flight routes, reaching almost 90 destinations.


Since our initial operation and a safe record of operation for over 20 years, accumulating over 3.549 million hours of safe flying, Hainan Airlines has maintained an excellent safety record.


In 2012, the company's total operating revenue for 2012 was 27.694bn yuan, achieving a transportation revenue of 25.084bn yuan, representing 23.27 million passengers transported. So far, the total assets of the company have exceeded 90bn yuan. As of 2012, the number employees exceeds 10,000.

Fleet composition


Hainan Airlines’ fleet is composed of Boeing 737, 767 and 787 series aircraft and the Airbus 330 and 340 series. The young and well-appointed fleet forms a reliable solution for the transportation of both passengers and cargo, All aircraft interiors feature a high quality premium class (first class cabin and/or an all new spacious and comfortable business-class cabin) with plenty of personal space for passengers. As of 2014, there are 136 planes in operation, with the Boeing 737s serving as the backbone of our fleet.
